Esther F. (Auman) Gates Bauman passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, September 8, 2021. Born on May 11, 1928, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Breon) Auman. In August 1946, she married Martin C. “Jim” Gates Jr. Together they raised ten children. Jim passed away in 1984. On March 26, 1988, she married Raymond Bauman who survives at home.
Esther was a homemaker on the family farm until her children were raised then she went to work in the Housekeeping Department at Penn State, retiring in 1991. She was a member of the Howard United Methodist Church.
Esther enjoyed both vegetable and flower gardening. She was an excellent cook and baker. She liked to travel and to go camping. She loved all animals and would watch all the wildlife in her fields from the back porch. Her favorite pastime was being with family and friends. She was always taking care of someone. She was a very giving person and was willing to help anyone at any time.
Esther is survived by her husband, Ray Bauman; ten children: Donald L. Gates and his wife, Dorothy, of Zion, Helen L. Watkins of Bellefonte, Anna Mae Frantz of Howard, Robert B. Gates of Milesburg, James E. Gates and his wife, Jane, of Haines City, Fl, Terry L. Gates and his wife, Diane, of Runville, Carol E. Moore and her husband, Robert, of Howard, Beverly A. Miller and her husband, Terry, of Zion, David C. Gates of Howard, and Wanda K. Welker and her husband, Kenneth, of Jersey Shore; six stepchildren: Brenda Schlesinger and her husband, Mark, of Lock Haven, Dennis Bauman and his wife, Nikki, of Lock Haven, Jeff Bauman of Gainesville, FL, Steve Bauman and his wife, Donna, of Lock Haven, Crystal Parks and her husband, John, of Mill Hall, and David Bauman of Elysburg. She is also survived by a half-brother, Charles Gates and his wife, Shirley, of Pleasant Gap, 22 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren.
Along with her parents and first husband, Esther was preceded in death by three brothers, five sisters, three grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
Visitation will be on Monday, September 13, 2021, from 6-8pm at the Howard United Methodist Church. Funeral service will be on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, at 10am at the church with Pastor Craig Rose officiating. Burial will be at Centre County Memorial Park in State College.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Howard United Methodist Church, 144 Main St. Howard, PA 16841 or to St. Jude’s Children Hospital, 387 E South St, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
